Paragraph 1
Thesis Statement: In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald uses figurative langue to convey Daisy motives.
Road Map: Fitzgerald conveys this by Daisy’s attachment to money, her hopes for her daughter and her lost dreams.
Paragraph 2
Topic: Daisy’s attachment to money
Quote: “The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon…”
What it means: In this quote the couch is symbolic for money and the two girls are buoyed to it meaning that they can not escape it. They are attached to it no matter what they do.
Quote: “…and the day before the wedding he gave her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.” (75-76)
What it means: This quote is from
Paragraph 3
Topic: her hopes for a family
Quote: I’m glad it’s a girl and I hope be a fool, and that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world a beautiful little fool.
What it means: This quote is saying that Daisy wants her daughter to be the same way that she is. She wants her daughter to rely on marrying rich also and not finding true love.
Paragraph 4
Topic: Daisy’s lost dreams.
Quote: “they’re such beautiful shirts…it makes me sad because I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before.” (92)
What it means: In this quote the shirts are a metaphor for marriage. Daisy is seeing Gatsby’s shirts and wishing that she married him. She chose Tom because he was rich and she did not want to leave the safety of money.
Quote: ‘“Take ‘em down-stairs and give ‘em back to whoever they belong to. Tell ‘em all daisy’s change’ her mine. Say: Daisy’s change’ her mine.’”
What it means: this takes place when Daisy is drunk right before her wedding and she is with
